There are only four available BA jobs at the 14th COA. Most judges are moving to permanent BA's. The three newest judges, plus LBY still take one-year BA's.
Justice Harriet O'Neill on SCOTX announced today she won't run for reelection to her seat in 2010. This means she'll still hire the 2010-11 clerks, but they'll be inherited halfway through their clerkship--likely by either current Justice Jim Moseley on the Dallas Court of Appeals or Justice Strange on the Eastland Court of Appeals--both of whom announced for her seat today.
SCOTX hired like 6 or so Baylor grads last year IIRC. I think maybe one UT grad AT MOST, perhaps zero. Word is that the justices don't like hiring from UT because the top UT students don't apply there--only the middling students do.
SCOTX typically has finished hiring by the end of October. Last year IIRC Jefferson had not hired until Dec., and several justices waited until Nov. because they were up for reelection in the fall.
Brister will not interview since he's resigning now (has already?). O'Neill will have to hire people because she's going to be serving at least three months of the 2010-11 term.
Gov. Rick Perry today appointed Appellate Justice Eva M. Guzman of Cypress as the first Hispanic female to serve on the Supreme Court of Texas for a term to expire at the next general election.
If and when anyone gets invited to interview with NLH at SCOTX, please don't hesitate to contact me re: interview tips, etc. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThe 14th Court of Appeals in Houston is hiring a Briefing Attorney for 2010-2011.

ReplyDeleteJustice Brister just announced his resignation from SCOTX effective next month. No word on who Gov. Perry is going to replace him with.

Does anyone know the history of what schools the Texas courts hired from last year?

ReplyDeleteJ. Marion from 3d COA (San Antonio) hired from St Mary's last year IIRC.
ReplyDeleteWhoops, I meant 4th COA.
ReplyDelete3d COA (AUSTIN) was only J. Jones last year, and he hired from UT.
CJ Jefferson and J Hecht have both extended interviews today.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update re: Jefferson and Hecht! Does anyone know about any other Justices OR what the typical dates are for extending offers?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Word is that Justice Willett has hired a Duke grad, which would leave him one more open spot for 2010-11.
